The Champs released the song “Tequila” as the B-side to the track “Train to Nowhere” in December 1957. “Tequila” proved to be more popular, however, climbing to No. 1 in the U.S. in March 1958. Largely an instrumental hit, the song’s only lyric is the word “tequila,” which is sung at three different points throughout the tune.

Tommy Tutone’s 1982 hit “867-5309” (aka “Jenny”) peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song forced multiple people to change their phone numbers from the titular digits to avoid prank calls.

Mungo Jerry’s 1970 hit “In the Summertime” was a No. 1 single in 15 different countries, and a top three hit in the U.S.

Captain & Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together” was one of the biggest songs of 1975, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 that June. The duo, who were married in real life, sang this optimistic ballad that evokes the idea that love can conquer all.

Whitney Houston knew a thing or two about love ballads, and her most famous is “I Will Always Love You.” The song was originally written and performed by country singer Dolly Parton in 1973, but Houston made it her own in 1992 for the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard.” The song won Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance at the 1994 Grammy Awards.

Dexys Midnight Runners’ 1982 hit “Come On Eileen” went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and remains the group’s only top 10 Hot 100 hit.

The Archies were a fictional band made up of characters from the “Archie” comics, but they became a real-life hit. The song “Candy Girl” reached No. 1 in 1969.

Jerry Lee Lewis hit it big with the song “Great Balls of Fire,” released on November 11, 1957. The singer opens by stating, “You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain,” before exclaiming, “Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!” at the end of that verse. The song was later included on 1986’s “Top Gun” soundtrack.

“Sweeter than wine / Softer than the summer night / Everything I want I have / Whenever I hold you tight…” This memorable chorus by American doo-wop group the Drifters is featured in the song “This Magic Moment,” released in January 1960.

Though Elvis Presley made “Blue Suede Shoes” famous, the song was initially released by Carl Perkins on December 19, 1955. The track begins with the lyrics, “Well, it’s one for the money, two for the show / Three to get ready, now go, cat, go!”

“Take On Me” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985, and its iconic music video won eight MTV Video Music Awards.

Harry Chapin’s 1974 single “Cat’s in the Cradle” was the artist’s only No. 1 hit.

“I Want to Know What Love Is” is Foreigner’s biggest song, but it almost wasn’t released. Apparently, some members of the band felt that the song was too “fluffy” for their rock image. However, its 1984 debut was a huge success, and the song eventually reached No. 1. Years later, “Rolling Stone” named it one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

“When it's cold outside / I've got the month of May…” The Temptations produced one of the most memorable love songs of the 20th century with their hit “My Girl.” The chart-topper was originally written by Smokey Robinson and inspired many snappy covers, but the Temptations’ version — released during the holiday season of 1964 — became the most popular version by far.

In September 1956, Fats Domino released the song “Blueberry Hill” on the album “This Is Fats Domino!” It opens with the lines, “I found my thrill / On Blueberry Hill / On Blueberry Hill / When I found you.”

One of Oasis’ most emotional tracks also became their biggest hit. Debuting as a single on their second album, “(What's the Story) Morning Glory?,” “Wonderwall” was a huge international success after its release in 1995.

Released in 1970, “Your Song” is one of Elton John’s biggest hits. Written by the singer’s longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, the song is about “absolute naivete in love,” in the writer’s words.

“That’ll Be the Day” was first recorded by Buddy Holly in 1956 and rerecorded with his band the Crickets in 1957. The song was Holly’s first major hit and helped redefine rock music. Initially, the song was rejected by record executives who believed rock ’n’ roll was a passing fad.

Frank Sinatra is known for love songs, and one of his best-known tunes is the 1964 hit “Fly Me to the Moon.” Though it wasn’t originally Sinatra’s song, he is the artist who made it famous. Bart Howard wrote the tune 10 years earlier in 1954, and Sinatra decided to include a cover of it on his album “It Might as Well Be Swing.”

“Whop bop b-luma b-lop bam bom” is the iconic opener to Little Richard’s classic track “Tutti Frutti.” The song was released in 1955 and was the performer’s first smash hit. Not only did it help pave the way for Little Richard’s prolific career, but the tune also helped reshape rock ’n’ roll music at the time.
