With 12 Grammy wins, country female group Dixie Chicks has won more Grammys than any other all-female group. In 1998, the trio released their debut album, “Wide Open Spaces,” which earned them one of their first Grammys for Best Country Album. In 2020, the group renamed themselves The Chicks, in an apparent effort to distance themselves from the connotations of the word “Dixie” and its ties to the Confederacy-era South.

During the recording of the Bangles' second album, "Different Light" (1986), they received a cassette from Prince — who was a big fan of the group — with the first version of “Manic Monday” on it, a song he had written and gifted to them. After their edits, and with Susanna Hoffs on lead vocals, they released the song in 1986, which became their first Top 10 hit.

In 1990, Beyoncé Knowles started the group Girl's Tyme with her childhood friends. Fronted by lead singer Belinda Carlisle, the Go-Go’s debut album, "Beauty and the Beat," features two of their biggest hits of all time: “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips are Sealed.” Released on July 8, 1981, the album remained at No. 1 on the Billboard chart for six weeks. The first single of the album, “Our Lips are Sealed,” was co-written by Go-Go’s guitarist Jane Wiedlin and her former boyfriend, Terry Hall.

In the mid-'80s, Salt-n-Pepa recorded their first single “The Showstoppa” as a favor to a friend who was studying record production. The song eventually landed at No. 46 on the Billboard R&B chart. Shortly after, members Salt (Cheryl James) and Pepa (Sandra Denton) asked Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella) to join them; some of their most enduring hits included “Push It,” “Let’s Talk About Sex,” and “Shoop.”

With earlier hits like “Cruel Summer,” English pop trio Bananarama hit international success in the mid-1980s thanks to their cover of “Venus” by Dutch rock band Shocking Blue. The catchy song rose to the top of the U.S. charts in 1986. Keren Woodward, Sarah Dallin, and Siobhan Fahey had formed the group six years earlier in London. The group is entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for most charting singles from a female band.

The Andrews Sisters were a singing and dancing trio that became one of the most popular musical groups of the 1940s. It's only fitting that during the World War II era, one of their most popular songs was about a young trumpet player from Chicago who was drafted into the army. The girls were nicknamed “America’s Wartime Sweethearts,” performing overseas for troops, as well as stateside where they appeared in movies and musical comedies.

Sisters Veronica (Spector) and Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley, first sang together as teenagers under the name “The Darling Sisters.” Veronica “Ronnie” was the lead singer, whose voice became synonymous with the 1960s girl group era. "Be My Baby" hit the airwaves during the summer of ‘63, and today, it is listed as No. 22 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The original Supremes — Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson — entered the music scene in the early 1960s under the name the “Primettes.” With classics like “Stop! In the Name of Love" and “Where Did Our Love Go?," the Supremes were the premier act of Motown Records. Motown is credited with creating its own namesake style of soul music, and would go on to work with big names like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Lionel Richie.

Shortly after the 1996 release of the Spice Girls' debut single “Wannabe,” the British magazine “Top of the Pops” wrote an article on the members of the group, using nicknames for them — Scary (Melanie Brown), Sporty (Melanie Chisholm), Baby (Emma Bunton), Ginger (Geri Halliwell), and Posh (Victoria Adams, later Victoria Beckham). The names were embraced by the young women, who used them for the rest of the group’s career.
