Based in the Persian city of Isfahan, Abd al Rahman al-Sufi was one of the most important Muslim scientists. He used the work of the ancient Greek mathematician and astronomer Ptolemy to create a new star catalog, “Book of the Fixed Stars,” published around 964 CE. Among his discoveries was what is now known as the Andromeda Galaxy, which wasn’t rediscovered by Western astronomers until the 17th century.

In the mid-ninth century, hundreds of years before the Wright Brothers’ historic flight, he built the first glider, made of silk and feather-wrapped wooden planks. Al-Zahrawi made the first heavier-than-air flight by jumping off a local mosque.

Al-Zahrawi was the court physician to the caliph of Cordoba, in Islamic Andalusian Spain. Around 1000 CE he published a 30-volume guide to surgery called Al-Tasrif, or “The Method.” It included designs for more than 200 surgical instruments and the first descriptions of diseases such as hemophilia. “The Method” remained one of the most influential books in Western medicine for 500 years.
